Called to testify

Jerry Varnado, pastor
Gateway Church, Athens GA

February 11, 2007

  • Main Scripture text: Revelation 12:7-11

  • Jesus Christ has empowered us and sent us to be witnesses in the world to His love, glory, power and truth.

  • What do witnesses do? They testify. They give their testimony.

  • The Bible tells that long ago there was war in heaven. When the devil got kicked out, the battle front moved to a new location. It's here -- on the Earth.

  • If we want to overcome the devil and the powers of wickedness, we need to follow the instructions given to us in Revelation 12.

  • The Apostle John says there are three elements to overcoming the enemy:

1)

The blood of the Lamb. It is by and through the blood of Jesus that the same power of the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead comes to live in our lives. (Ephesians 1:18-20).

It is this overwhelming power from God that enables us to overcome all the power of the enemy.

2)

The word of testimony. This is the subject I will focus on today.

3)

Total commitment to Christ. The believers described in Revelation 12 were so in love with Jesus and so committed to the cause of the Kingdom it was more important to them than life itself.

Jesus was truly the Lord of their lives.

  • What is a testimony? It's the account of how Jesus Christ has affected a person's life.

  • A testimony points to three truths:

1)

The insufficiency of human effort. We cannot save ourselves and we can't live successfully without God.

The Old Testament law demonstrated human insufficiency. People could not obey it.

2)

The total sufficiency of Christ. Jesus is able to save completely.

There is no sin, no problem, difficulty, hardship, no hurt or pain that is beyond the reach of His healing, redeeming grace.

3)

That God's power is available to us and will transform our lives.

A testimony, properly presented will witness to a "power encounter": the Kingdom of God overcoming the Kingdom of darkness and overcomes it.

  • Why should we testify?

1)

Expression builds faith. We probably do not really believe until we are willing to speak.

As we do open our mouths and speak our faith is strengthened because we commit ourselves.

2)

Testifying is part of becoming an overcomer. 1 John 5:4 says that "everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith."

Speaking and confessing the Lordship of Jesus helps build that faith that overcomes the world.

3)

Testifying encourages other believers.

It strengthens their faith as they see the power of God a work through our lives.

4)

Testifying draws others To Jesus. When someone hear the testimony of God's power working in another person's life, often it will often create in them a longing for God.

Oswald Chambers wrote: "You can never give another person what you have found, but you can make them homesick for the same thing."

5)

We are called by Christ to to be witnesses to Him. We must walk our talk. But we must also talk our walk.

If our faith is a private matter it is not the faith that Jesus or the New Testament writers proclaimed.

We don't witness to our faith by the way we live our lives only. We have to tell people why we are who we are -- and why we do what we do.
